Apparently newegg is supposed to be switching to a lottery draw for
their video cards... saw an article last week on it.

God that would be nice. I'm pretty sick of this mining market pricing for cards, too.

read an article about it, but haven't seen it since... haven't really
tried... hopefully within a few months, I'll be able to snag a couple
RTX 3070s for close to list price.

On my bargain-basement box, I just bought a MSI branded Nvidia GT 1030 card for $89. It's an upgrade from my current system and should last me some
time - I'm a light gamer, mostly playing old retro games.

I helped my son shop for a card about a year ago, and he bought am AMD RX
    560. I was shocked when looking at a) the price of cards now, and b) the
lack of stock online - most places were sold out of the majority of their items.

And here I was, thinking that home bitcoin mining was a thing of the past...

Yeah, it's definitely bak in full swing, which is somewhat
upsetting as I'd kind of like to get a couple RTX cards, but
not for what they're going for on ebay or amazon scalpers.

Maybe I'm naive to the process, but I just can't understand for the life of me why these companies don't just... build more inventory? Stock more cards? Meet demand?

It just seems like we should be able to pick whatever hardware we want to run and push the order button... I'm not a big gamer, nor do I need all the power in the world - but I want to get into video editing and will have to hunt and be open to different options now that I need a decent video card. Sheesh.

I thought the covid pandemic had something to do with it. With people having been in quarantine, there may have been fewer people working to produce computer parts, thus the lack of supply. It seems like it has been across the board - There's a printer I've been considering buying that has been out of stock at most places I've looked, and it seems scalpers are trying to sell it for a higher price than its normal retail price.

I also heard a story in the news recently that even car makers (specifically, Ford) have been affected by the drop in supply of computer chips and parts.

As far as it being due to the covid pandemic, I guess I'm not sure if that's a major factor or not.

    Stock more cards? Meet demand?

Low supply = more demand, higher cost per unit. Why build to meet demand
when you can increase the value (and therefore the cost) by not keeping up with demand instead?

Let demand jack up the cost, change your product from a commodity to a specialty item, and make more money selling fewer units - and get free advertising bumping your product from one of dozens to The One People Need
    to Have.

    Marketing 101.

That only works if you don't fear the competitor making more cards than you in order to fill the demand.

It's not a lack of desire to build more cards... It takes years to build
a processor or memory fabrication plant. This stuff gets backlogged for
3-5 years. Not to mention costing billions to do so. Which is why they
don't over-build in the first place. Combined with network of shortages
in supply chains throughout the world, it just doesn't go well.

Combined with more demand than typical from more people at home and in
need of newer computers, and/or the crypto miners buying every GPU they
can to the point they're buying laptops with GPU power to drain
everything resembling inventory from every resource.

And it's not price, or value (performance per dollar or watt),
everything short of the lowest end is sold out everywhere. Even most of
the higher end business cards are sold out.
